Welcome to Heirloom Portraits

Heirloom Portraits is a study in intentionality, founded by Raymond McCrea Jones to bridge the gap between traditional family portraiture and modern storytelling. Using a unique blend of large-format photography and high-end digital image making, we document your family’s history with the depth and detail it deserves. Having your family photographed in this way is not only unique but it's rare and it may be something you only do once in your life.

Standard Session

$650

A one-hour session on location focused on group portraits and the authentic, unposed moments that happen in between. We’ll meet at a setting of your choice to capture your family as you actually are. The session includes a curated gallery of 20 or more high-resolution, retouched digital images.

Heirloom Session

$1200

A two-hour session that expands on the digital documentary approach with the addition of large format film portraiture. We’ll spend the first portion of the session on location with digital capture, followed by a more deliberate series of portraits using a large format camera on your choice of color or black and white film. This session includes 50+ retouched digital images along with the high-resolution scans from the film negatives.

FAQ

Why large format film?
Film is classic, tangible, rare and has an organic and beauty digital simply cannot replicate. At Heirloom portraits we shoot on a large formate camera using 4x5 inch sheet film, that's 15 times larger than a 35mm negative. This is the foundational "slow photography" used by masters two centuries ago. Today, it is a disappearing art; very few photographers possess the technical mastery to command these cameras. This will most likely be the only time in your life you are photographed with this type of camera. It is indeed a beautiful and magical process.
What do we wear?
Whatever you want. These are your pictures so you do you.
Where do we do the pictures?
We typically do them at and around your home. Preferably outside but inside can also be an option based on your setup.
How long does it take to get our images?
Usually about two weeks. But with film sometimes we are the mercy of the film lab which can have delays.
What type of film do you shoot?
Large format 4x5 film.
We use black and white, color and sometimes more experimental film like expired film stock. My decision is based on the subjects, the location and the overall vibe I want to create inspired by the family. If there's something specific you like let me know in the questionnaire. We can get just about any film.
